Briata Raimondo

"I paint to expose an inner narrative born out of my own complex personal history. I grew up in the chaos of post-colonial Somalia. I experienced the degradation of a society starting from a military coup in 1969 to full blown war in 1991. I know what the gradual collapse of an entire society can do to one’s world, one’s family relations, and one’s psyche.
My paintings are an attempt to make poetry out of disorder. The visual amalgams that I set up represent a field of aesthetic possibilities in which new shapes arise, spatial tension is created, and texture and layers emerge. I seek to create an event that acts as a metaphysical bridge between my inner world and the viewer." - BR
