  • About

“Ab Ovo” is an interactive installation that features in an entirely innovative and original way the ancient Chinese puzzle Tangram, or “The Seven Stones of Wisdom”. As a variant on the original game’s square configuration, I proposed the oval Tangram, with rounded edges that allow for more organic shapes. Assembled and disassembled, the nine brightly colored solids form images and suggestions that get an allegorical match in the alarming news reports from the world we are powerlessly witnessing.

Ancilotto Camilla

Camilla Ancilotto was born in Rome where she currently lives and works. In 1999, she obtained her Masters in Fine Arts from the New York Academy of Art. Her early painting and sculpture focused on multiple interactive figurations, realized by way of rotating parallelepipeds.

In 2012, her monumental work ‘Original Sin’ became a permanent fixture at the Wolfson Campus sculpture collection in Miami Dade College.

In 2013 her work was selected for the 55th International Art Exhibition at the Venice Biennale with the piece ‘Deposizione’ (Deposition).

In 2017, Ancilotto began experimenting with modular polychrome works inspired by the Tangram, the ancient Chinese puzzle. This new cycle, entitled Ab Ovo, garnered special attention at the internationally renowned Spoleto Festival dei Due Mondi with the solo exhibition, “Mutaforma” (Shapeshifting) at Palazzo Collicola Arti Visive - Museo Carandente.

In 2018, she took part in both BIAS – Manifesta 12, Palermo, and the “Premio Van Gogh - International Art Exhibition”, Monreale, where her work Katharsis received “the most innovative” work of art award. That same year, Ancilotto was invited to participate in the 45th edition of the contemporary art prize “Premio Sulmona” 2018. Her work Nigredo was awarded third prize.

In January, 2019 Camilla’s work again joined the international art circuit and was featured at the Los Angeles Art Show. In April, her Ab Ovo works were exhibited at the Milan Design Week at the prestigious Mandarin Oriental Hotel. During the summer months, she took part in the Contemporary Art International Competition held at Palazzo Rospigliosi, Zagarolo, winning the “Toy Museum” prize, as well as in the exhibition “EMOZIONI IN MOSTRA - Armenia meets the World” at Castel dell’Ovo in Naples.

During the fall of the same year, three Ab Ovo works were featured at the interactive exhibition “Bimbumbam” in the porticoed cloister of the Palermo Chiaramonte-Steri Palace. In October, she was among a group of specially selected artists invited to take part in the innovative project “MACRO ASILO Atelier” organized at the Museum of Contemporary Art of Rome. That same month, the Premio Sulmona “Gaetano Pallozzi” renewed its invitation at the Polo Museale Civico Diocesano di S. Chiara, where ‘Ab Ovo’ (missile configuration, steel) won the event's Special Prize.

Towards the end of 2019 and the beginning of 2020, Camilla Ancilotto returned with ‘Ab Ovo’ to Museo Carlo Bilotti at the Orangery in Villa Borghese for the show “Unforgettable Childhood” curated by Ermanno Tedeschi and promoted by Roma Capitale, the Cultural Growth Council Department, and the Culture Department of the Embassy of Israel in Italy.

In 2021, the traveling exhibition “Bimbumbam” – including the three Ab Ovo sculptures – featured at the National Archaeological Museum of Naples.
