About the artist

Nitsch Hermann

Austria

Hermann Nitsch (1938-2022), a prominent figure in the European Body Art movement, was a key exponent of the Wiener Aktionismus alongside Günter Brus, Otto Mühl, and Rudolf Schwarzkogler. His Orgies Mysteries Theater, developed between 1957-1960, embodied the concept of Gesamtkunstwerk (total art) and focused on emotional release (abreaction) to break religious, moralistic, and sexual taboos through ritualistic performances. Nitsch’s work is held in prestigious collections, including the Centre Georges Pompidou, Guggenheim, MOMA, and the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
